Continuing Action – Seek funding for transportation investments

The SANDAG Board of Directors will continue to discuss the timing of future ballot measures to generate additional local funding to help implement San Diego Forward: The 2019 Federal Regional Transportation Plan (RTP).

In 2020, several state funding programs will issue calls for projects, including the Solutions for Congested Corridors Program, Trade Corridor Enhancement Program, Local Partnership Program, Active Transportation Program, and Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program. The SANDAG Board of Directors will consider projects to put forward in applications for these competitive programs. Potential shovel-ready projects include the Del Mar Bluffs Stabilization, Otay Mesa East Port of Entry, Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor double tracking, and regional bikeway projects. In 2020, the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) will also be adopted, and it is expected to include funding for the I-5 North Coast Corridor and the San Onofre to Pulgas Phase 2 intercity rail project.

In response to a Notice of Funding Opportunity for the Department of Transportation’s INFRA grant, SANDAG, in partnership with Caltrans and NCTD, is planning to submit an application to leverage state funds for the Del Mar Bluffs stabilization. The Federal Transit Administration has also released a 2020 Notice of Funding Opportunity for bus and bus facility projects that will be considered as projects are brought to the Board.
